Great question, nice to see you really getting to know the instrument through the course.
And.. you’re right, you are listening when using both these techniques, listening for the right effect. Sometimes we need to learn the rules first before we can break them, and this is the case here, we are not needing to hit the specific bends when using these effects, as it is indeed the sound or cool effect we are going for.
I must express that even having said that, if you could not bend properly then you would not get any where near the best benefit of these techniques and it could sound like mush. What ends up really happening when you use these techniques properly is that you have one bend (usually the lower of the two holes) that works as the lead note, with the higher note adding the extra flavor or effect.
